The Fish Souq

Visit the Fish Souq and enjoy yourself. It is a place full of color, people and noise. As soon as you enter the market you will be approached by a 'helper'.

This is a service that, for a few Dirhams, will bring you someone to carry your fish, bargain on your behalf and for a little extra, carry your fish for scaling and filleting.

Is the fish fresh?

The skin, scales and eyes should be shiny. Fresh fish smells of the sea. Prawns should be whitish gray.

How much to pay?

The price varies depending on the season. Go to different stalls and compare but they are usually quite similar.

Which fish?

There are many fish in the Souq - the most popular are: Hamour (similar to Cod), Hamra (Red Snapper), Safi (compares to Sole), Zubeidi (Pomfret), Jodar (Tuna), Cigalees (similar to Crayfish - a must!), lobster, prawns, squids, etc....

Tips: Wear old shoes, as the floor is wet. Take your cool box so your car does not smell 'fishy' and the fish stays fresh.
